An anonymous donor has given 38 BTC, which at that time was worth around $23,000, to an African charity called The Water Project. Thanks to these funds, the charity will be able to provide sanitation facilities and clean water to an entire school.
Local teams of The Water Project work in Kenya, Sierra Leone and Uganda and have been supported by the Bitcoin community before, as thanks to BitGive they were able to raise funds that let them build a water well in Kenya, bringing water to a community of over 500 people and a secondary school for girls.
The Water Project revealed that thanks to the generosity of Bitcoin community, they were able to fund five projects over the last couple of years and they have documented how they spend funds on their Bitcoin Donation Page.

Two transactions, huge help
The large donation was made on the night of September 13th and came in two separate transactions and, most probably, will be used to support building a water well in Sierra Leone. The charity thanked the donor over Reddit, saying:
So we don’t know who you are, but we’re grateful. And so, just in case you hang out here, we want to say thanks! Today you gave enough BTC – totally anonymously – to provide clean, safe water and sanitation facilities to an entire school AND for the monitoring and repair funds to keep it working for years to come.
Nobody knows if the donor will choose to remain anonymous or reveal themselves but, for sure, that donation won’t go to waste and proves that Bitcoin can be used to spread sympathy and help. The charity says that all donations are just important to them, as every single bitcoin can provides clean water to the ones in need.
